The Safety I's are a simple set of behaviours that guide how we work and interact every day. They give everyone a common safety language and make it clear what good looks like in practice.

The safety I's describe how we:

Insight – Share knowledge and learn
Innovation – Find better ways of working
Influence – Lead by example and support each other
Intervention – Speak up and step in when needed
Integration – Make safety part of everything we do

Insight Share your knowledge about safety and be willing to listen and learn from others.

Innovation Be open to new ways of doing your work and to new ideas. Go beyond compliance and aim for excellence.

Influence Be a good role model. Contribute to creating a strong safety culture by showing the right behaviour and attitude towards your work and colleagues.

Performance Delta

What is it: a continuous cycle of improvement

The Performance Delta is a proactive performance and culture tool that helps identify unsafe behaviours before incidents occur.

It strengthens a proactive performance culture through a structured three-stage cycle:

Diagnosis – anonymous crew surveys on key topics (e.g. leadership, risk management)
Dialogue – open discussions onboard and between ship and shore
Development – turning insights into actions to improve how we work and behave

Performance Delta supports honest conversations about how we work, helping us learn and improve continuously.

Safe Talks

What is it: Creating Open Safety Dialogue

Safe Talk is a simple, team-based game designed for crew members to create open dialogue about real safety challenges onboard.

By using real-life scenarios in a relaxed setting, it:

encourages people to speak up and share experiences
strengthens awareness of human factors
improves collaboration and team understanding

Safe Talk topics are typically used during Monthly Risk Management Committee Meetings.

Safety Leadership / Mindset Course

What is it: Training in a Common Way of Thinking

The Safety Leadership & Safety Mindset courses are practical training courses for both onboard and shore personnel.

The courses help the participants to;

build a shared understanding of safety
develop a common language and mindset through the WeCare components
focus on behaviour and teamwork and the application of the WeCare Enablers

These courses help people think, talk, and act in a safer and consistent way, so safety becomes part of daily decisions and teamwork.

What is it: the approach to managing risk

The Risk Management Standard provides a structured framework for risk assessment and safe work execution.

It:

Provides a summary of all our safety concepts and supporting processes
Defines how risk should be identified and managed (3 phase process)
Provides the tools for consistent risk control measures

The risk management standard provides a shared approach to manage risk and improve safety and operational performance.

We speak up and stop any work if it is unsafe

In practice:

If something looks unsafe, speak up and pause the work right away.
Act when you see a danger. Make it safe or ask for help to make it safe.
Talk calmly and respectfully. Help others feel safe to speak up.

#2 PPE

We wear the right PPE and ensure it's in good condition.

In practice:

Wear the right PPE required for the task. If you are not sure, stop and ask before starting.
Check your PPE before you start work and make sure it fits well and is not damaged. If it is damaged, replace it immediately.
Help others if they are missing or using the wrong PPE.

#3 Plan and execute the job

We identify, manage and control risks that may harm persons, the environment or cause damage to assets.

In practice:

Follow the permit to work rules. No work starts until the permit is approved.
Do a toolbox talk at the worksite before the work starts. Talk about the risks and how to work safely.
If something changes when you are doing the job, stop work, talk again, and make it safe before continuing.

#4 Move safely onboard

We hold handrails, avoid shortcuts, and look out for slip and trip hazards.

In practice:

Move carefully, stay aware and make every step a safe one.
Always use handrails when going up and down of stairs.
Watch out for hazards and do not rush or take shortcuts.

#5 Housekeeping

We keep our work areas clean and clear, and tidy up after the job.

In practice:

Keep walkways and work areas clear. Do not leave tools, cables, or materials where people walk.
Clean up after the job. When the work is finished, stow equipment, remove waste, and restore the area.
Keep work and storage areas tidy. A tidy space is safer and easier to work in.

#6 Enclosed space

We only enter an enclosed space if it's been ventilated and the atmosphere is confirmed safe.

In practice:

Standard enclosed space entry is only allowed after approval, with a risk assessment, permit, and toolbox talk completed.
Check the air; ventilate and test before and during entry.
Never enter alone and never try to rescue by yourself.

#7 Hot work

We only conduct hot work with a permit and the area is free of flammable material and gases.

In practice:

Hot work is only allowed after approval, with a risk assessment, permit, and toolbox talk completed.
Make sure the area is gas free and free from flammable materials.
Always have a fire watch and firefighting equipment ready.

#8 Working at heights and overboard

We work safely at height and use the right equipment when there is a risk of falling.

In practice:

Working at heights and overboard is only allowed after approval, with a risk assessment, permit, and toolbox talk completed.
Always wear a safety harness and keep yourself continuously connected to a strong anchor point.
Never work alone – always have an attendant watching and ready to react.

#9 Energy Isolation

We ensure equipment is isolated before any work on it is done.

In practice:

Before any maintenance on equipment, make sure it is switched off, locked, and tagged.
If you are working on the equipment, your lock must be on it. One person = one lock.
Always prove isolation before starting and only remove locks when work is finished.

We know our muster stations, evacuation routes, and how to use emergency equipment.

In practice:

Know your muster station, escape routes, and what to do when the alarm sounds.
Know the emergency equipment and take care of it.
Take drills, briefings, and checks seriously, because real emergencies do not give second chances.
